STIR: Sharing a pleasant experience over a bowl of soup
YAK BEOW SEAH & CHONG BOON POK

3 June - 11 June 2004

STIR is the first collaborative work between Yak Beow Seah & Chong Boon Pok. The motivation for this project stems from the artists' mutual interest in ideas of sharing and the everyday.

In Seah's work, the gallery space is often a place for direct contact and exchange with visitors. Through offering something for free, Seah focuses on regenerating an understanding of sharing or 'free giving'. Pok's practice is concerned with exploring the 'everyday'. By observing and dissecting objects, systems and events, Pok seeks to reveal 'the fields of energy' which connect us to our surroundings.

As both artists enjoy and are inspired by the notion of festivity that 'gives rise to the notion of sharing and communicating through these activities', STIR is an amalgamation of Seah and Pok's interests. 'This project offers sociable moments through convivial situations developed as part of a "friendship culture".' Experimenting with soup and, the gesture of offering it to guests in a gallery space is for both artists, an act of beauty, but equally, it posits the nature of an experiential aesthetic within the gallery environment.
