BOX PROJECT

27 February – 22 March 2002

Box Project is a touring exhibition from the Museum of Installation (MOI). It includes the participation of artists, curators, theorists and writers. They are invited to use/customise a standard box to make a 'statement' on the theme of the Imaginary Museum.

The MOI have already collected over 250 boxes during the last four years and are continuing to build the collection.

The Box Project makes reference to an established practice in 20th century art, notably by fluxus and surrealist artists. However the approach towards the box as an 'installation' carries with it other references – references that question the convention of the box as a container. The box ceases to act as a 'window' on the world/psyche in the surrealist tradition, or as a reduction absurdum of the world in the fluxist tradition, instead the box acquires an 'uncertain' presence faced with a multiplicity of possible metaphors and strategies of containment. The box project updates the "worlds in a box" concept with new commissioned work from a wide range of contemporary practitioners.

The Box Project aims to be accessible and interesting to the widest audience. It demonstrates the working methods of contemporary practitioners and the diversity of boxes made so far provides an insight into the range of possible strategies for art making. There is also an interactive component to the project – many boxes require the active participation of the viewer to 'open' them.

Catalogue: A CD-ROM index of boxes is available to accompany the Box Project touring show, which enables further access to images, sound, and text.
