THE GENDERED CITY

27 February – 26 March 2004

The Gendered City, a group show, explores and reveals the connections between gender construction and the construction of urban space. Through the selection of works and the inclusion of a body of theoretical material, the show proposes a discursive context for the presentation of six projects by Spanish-based artists Ana Navarrete, Carmen Navarrete, Jesús Martínez Oliva, Vicent Sevila, William James and Xoán Anleo.

Recent theory argues that gender is generated collectively in everyday life through the repetition of behavioural codes, performance, and sites at which rituals and codes of behaviour come to generate gender and sexual identities. Just as the conduct and mobility of the gendered citizen has become increasingly regulated by architectural models and zones of function, the history of architecture has been marked by ideas about the gendered body.

Through a variety of approaches and using diverse media (including photography, slide projections, recorded interviews, posters and digital output), the works selected for The Gendered City form a challenging critique of both the cultural and the physical constructions of urban space.

Exhibition toured to the University of Castilla La Mancha, Cuenca, Spain, in June 2004.
