Potential Hits is an exhibition created & co-ordinated by Mike Dawson, Artist and Arts Editor for Flux Magazine.
Dawson will present a series of Certificates under the title of Potential Hits; each certificate states the name of an individual artist and the title & idea of an unrealised exhibition. Dawson invited a number of contemporary artists to contribute to Potential Hits by answering the following: If there was one show you had always wanted to see happen what would it be? Are you prepared to trust someone else to realise it? Will they invest in your vision?
Richard Wilson's certificate reads:
"We start with a short rendition of Arthur Brown's 'Fire'. We then light barrels of tar, which roll from slopes aimed at the gallery. These go smashing through the glass windows igniting the straw to start the second act" (Potential Hits 2002).
Other Potential Hits will be exhibited, including Simon Patterson, Franko B, Richard Wilson and Stuart Home.
For a small fee the public have the opportunity to purchase the right to realise a specific exhibition, in return they will receive a signed certificate that also acts as a contract. The buyer must execute the exhibition within five years of making the purchase, failing this they are obliged to return the certificate and the right to produce the exhibition to the artist who conceived the idea. If after a further five years the show has still not been produced, Mike Dawson will then take possession of the 'deeds', and will have the option to visualise the show in the following five years or to return it to the market.
Potential Hits offers a range of ideas varying from the profound to the preposterous, and enters all participants into a game of trust & ownership.
