This is not a collaboration

Artists’ Talk: Thursday May 25th 2006 at 6.30pm
Susan Taylor and Flávia Müller Medeiros have been brought together
by what could be described as a shared interest in making performances.
Where Susan often positions herself as a confrontational sometimes provocative
subject in relation to her viewer, Flávia commonly adopts a more
congenial persona, in her use of a willing and sometimes unwitting audience.
Together the artists seek to explore the relationships between notions
of self, politics and rebellion.
For this exhibition Susan and Flávia present different aspects of
their practice which incorporates live performance, photography, drawing,
collage, video and sound. In keeping with the assertion that “This
is not a collaboration”, Susan and Flávia have also produced
new works, inspired in part by recognition of the generational and cultural
differences that inform their respective working methods.
Through using discussion, performance, chance and improvisation, to make
what at times appear as arbitrary or provisional acts, This is not a
collaboration considers the nature of rebellious, individualistic or collaborative
gestures in art.
Accompanying the exhibition is an illustrated poster/brochure featuring
interviews between the artists and Richard Hylton, Curator at Unit
2 Gallery.
The exhibition has been supported by London Metropolitan University,
Arts Council England, London and A. Bliss
